Reading 2’s first game of the season was a thriller ending in a 7-run defeat by Thatcham Town 1st team.

Thatcham's innings was built around a gritty knock by Jack Young who ended up top-scoring on 70. A number of quick wickets by opening bowlers Thisara and Raheel kept things tight in the first 10 overs. Thatcham’s middle order managed to keep the scoreboard ticking, re-building after the loss of early wickets. Reading's bowlers worked hard despite not much support being given from the wicket, Thisara (on debut) emerging as the standout performer. Thisara's impressive spell saw him claim four wickets and showed just what he could do. His tricky variations and pace troubled the Thatcham batsmen, keeping Reading in contention throughout the first innings.

Chasing 201 for victory, Reading Cricket Club started their innings cautiously. But at 64-1 they would have been favourites until a collapse led them to 67-7 and almost game over. This brought together the Farooq brothers (Rafae and Raheel) who put on a brilliant partnership and showed just what was required on a slow wicket to bat on. Rafae's half-century was a blend of well-timed boundaries and smart running between the wickets which was just what was needed given the slow outfield. Raheel added a well-compiled 30 runs to the tally, showing just how calm he can be under immense pressure. The fact Reading were in touching distance in the last over was a testament to how the brothers played and they can be hugely proud of the fight they showed.

Reading fell just short of the target, ending their innings at 193 after a brilliant diving catch at mid-off ended Raheel’s innings. Thatcham Town ending up the deserved winners on the day but positive to be built on for Reading who will look to bounce back in their second league game away at Theale and Tilehurst 1st team next Saturday.
